Wow, this is difficult. (plus Do or Die Chapter 6) Empty Wow, this is difficult. (plus Do or Die Chapter 6)

So I'm trying to turn Do or Die into a screenplay, right? Basically a movie.

It's not as easy as it sounds. Trust me.

But I'll keep trying at it.

Here's Chapter 6 of Do or Die, by the way.

----

Leonard Bolvoski sighed as two guards led him to the cafeteria. He had
been in prison for only a couple weeks, but it felt like several years had passed.
Even though he had given up a lot of crucial information in his interview, he still
thought he could save his hide if he returned to Russia. Just as the guards opened
the cafeteria doors for him, he decided that he would definitely escape this

oppressive place.

He sat down at a table, trying to think of how exactly the escape plan would
work. He knew that air vents large enough to hold him connected all of the cells
and hallways with the outside world, but he didn’t know exactly which vents
would take him to his freedom. He decided that he needed a map of the vents.

He also considered how he’d get past security if he was caught. Surely they
wouldn’t shoot him…not at first, anyway. They’d probably just try to capture him
so they could put him back in his cell…or in a new, more secure one. Leonard
eventually decided that his freedom was worth the risk, and began to think of
how to get a map of the ventilation shafts.

As he was thinking of this, a large criminal known only as “The Thief” sat
down in front of Leonard. The Thief was only an inch shorter than Leonard, but he
was much more muscular and physically fit. He had a mustache and bright green
eyes that could make any equal or superior adversary quake in fear. His knuckles
were worn; he was obviously a fighter.

The Thief got his nickname after he stole valuable maps of three United
States government buildings and distributed them to three criminal organizations.
Although he was captured and put in prison, only two of the three maps were
ever found.

Knowing that The Thief would probably be able to get at least a little
information on the layout of the vents, Leonard cleared his throat to get The
Thief’s attention. The Thief looked right at Leonard, causing his eyes to bulge and
his heart rate to shoot up.

“Um…are you The Thief?” Leonard asked shyly.

“Yeah,” he responded. “Why do you wanna know?”

“Well, uh…” Leonard leaned in close. “OK, listen. I’m tired of being in
this jail; I want to break out of here. I noticed that there are ventilation shafts
connecting the hallways and the cells with the outside, and I want to escape

through those shafts.”

“OK, so what do you want me to do?” The Thief asked.

“Well, you’re famous for stealing maps, correct? I want you to get me a
map of the ventilation shafts, so I don’t get lost and can find my way out.”

“What’s in it for me?”

Leonard inhaled and exhaled slowly, knowing that there was only one
option. “You can come with me,” he said.

The Thief smiled slightly. “I’ve been here for two years, man. I want out.
You’ve got yourself a deal.”

“Really? Great!”

“Meet me at this very table tomorrow at lunch. I’ll have the maps for our
escape then.”

As The Thief got up and walked away, Leonard’s stomach growled. Smiling,
he walked to the lunch counter and got some lunch, thinking about his escape.

The next day, as Leonard’s usual guards led him to the cafeteria, he
couldn’t help but sing his favorite Russian folk songs. After two weeks of living the
life of a prisoner, he was going to be free! The guards opened the cafeteria doors
for him, apparently unaware of the escape plan that was about to unfold.

Leonard spotted The Thief and quickly made his way toward him. He sat
down opposite The Thief and put his head on his hands, smiling.

“Did you manage to get the map?” he asked.

The Thief pulled out a sheet of paper with a detailed map of the ventilation
system of the first floor of the prison on it. “I got it,” he confirmed.

“Great!” Leonard exclaimed.

“So when are we busting out of here?” The Thief asked.

“I don’t know,” Leonard responded. He looked around to make sure that he
wasn’t heard. “I want to get out of here as soon as possible, though. I’m tired of
prison life, and I want to get back to my home country, Russia.”

“I’m not interested in your backstory,” The Thief said. He looked around
and said loudly, “Let’s escape now!”

Several prisoners and guards looked at the pair. The Thief smiled and
added, “Next time you try to recruit help, make sure you’re talking to a criminal
that hasn’t been successfully reformed.” The Thief got up and walked away as the
guards began to advance toward Leonard.

Leonard had to think quickly, or he would be captured (or worse, killed).
He grabbed the map that The Thief had carelessly left lying on the table, stuffed
it into his prison shirt, and began to sprint away. The guards gave chase, but
refrained from firing for the time being.

Leonard quickly threw open the doors of the cafeteria to find a single guard
standing there, waiting for him. Thinking quickly, Leonard kicked the gun out of
the man’s hand, grabbed his long police baton, and shoved it into the handles of
the cafeteria doors, effectively creating a temporary, makeshift lock.

As guards began pounding on the door, Leonard put up his fists and
motioned for the other guard to approach him. The guard made a break for his
gun, but Leonard ran up and kicked him to the ground. Leonard quickly picked up
the gun and shot the guard four times, killing him.

Knowing the guards would definitely be shooting now, Leonard quickly
fled the scene. As he turned the corner, the police baton fell out of the door
handles, and a dozen guards came out of the cafeteria, giving chase. Another two
dozen were attempting to escort the prisoners in the cafeteria back to their cells;
presumably the warden had ordered the prison to be locked down.

Leonard reached a large air vent just as the dozen guards reached him. As
they began shooting, he jumped, caught the edge of the air vent, and attempted
to climb into it. As he was doing this, he was shot in the leg; a wave of pain surged

through Leonard’s body, but he kept going. He finally managed to pull himself
completely into the vent, and the guards now had no clue as to where he was.

With this, Leonard began to crawl through the vent. He pulled out the map,
but the vent was so dark he could barely read it. On several occasions, he reached
intersections that, according to the map, shouldn’t have been there. On other
occasions, he reached turns that shouldn’t have been there, or didn’t see turns
where there should’ve been turns. He quickly realized that he was lost.

After crawling through the vent for what seemed like hours, Leonard finally
decided to give escaping a shot, and kicked in the nearest vent cover, dropping
into the room. He wasn’t outside; instead, he was in the guard barracks! Although
there was only one guard in the barracks (as most of the other guards were
helping in finding Leonard and locking down the rest of the prisoners), Leonard
couldn’t help but feel nervous as he motioned for the other guard to fight him.

The guard picked up his gun, but Leonard shot the gun out of the man’s
hand. He fired another shot, sending a bullet into the man’s left arm, and
approached him.

“We’re both injured,” Leonard said, gritting his teeth at the mention of the
pain in his leg. “We shall fight like men with our fists, not like savages with our
guns!”

The guard answered this by again going for his gun. Leonard, being closer
to the gun, hobbled over to it and kicked it out of the way, then attempted to
uppercut the guard. The guard dodged and sent a right hook Leonard’s way.
Leonard dodged, but backed up onto his wounded leg, causing him to stumble
backward. The guard picked Leonard up by the collar of his prison shirt and
punched him. Leonard kicked the guard with his good leg, using a chair rather
than his hurt leg to support his weight, and the guard stumbled backward and
finally fell. He attempted to catch himself with his hurt arm, and as he landed, he
writhed in pain.

Feeling victorious, Leonard picked up his gun and cocked it. “Don’t worry,

your arm won’t hurt for long,” he said.

“What about fighting like men? What about fighting with our fists?” the
guard asked wildly.

Leonard raised the pistol and said, “I never said I wasn’t a savage.” Smiling,
he pulled the trigger, killing the man.

From outside, Leonard heard a guard yell, “I heard a shot fired in the
barracks! Move! Move! Move!” Leonard quickly pulled off the cover of a different
vent shaft and dove inside, pulling out the map again. This time, he was only in
the vent for a few minutes before he saw a glint of what looked like sunlight.
Quickly, he crawled toward it and kicked it in.

After roaming through the ducts for a seemingly long time, Leonard
had finally made his escape from the prison. A few armored trucks, however,
reminded Leonard that his escape wasn’t over just yet; he still had to make it past
the prison gates.

As the armored trucks approached Leonard, all he could do was hobble like
mad and hope he wasn’t shot or captured. As he continued to hobble toward the
gate, he realized that he wasn’t being shot despite being shot at. Maybe I’m going
to make it, Leonard thought to himself.

A large armored truck drove up right next to Leonard, and a large man with
a machine gun leaned out of the passenger window, aiming directly at Leonard.
Running on adrenaline and knowing that this could be his last moment on Earth,
Leonard leaped onto the truck and managed to get the gun out of the guard’s
hand. As soon as he leapt onto the truck, everyone ceased fire. They didn’t want
to risk hitting one of their own.

Leonard opened the passenger door and tried to pull the man out of the
vehicle. The driver of the vehicle, however, stopped the truck and grabbed the
man’s waist, trying to keep him in the vehicle. Leonard pulled out his pistol and
shot the driver, causing him to suddenly let go of the other man. Both Leonard
and the other man were flung out of the vehicle and landed hard on the ground.

Leonard got up and punched the other man with as much strength as he could
muster, knocking him out.

Before the other guards could start shooting again, Leonard hobbled back
to the truck, climbed into it, and started it. He then put it in gear and sped off as
the guards resumed their shooting.

After driving for half a minute, Leonard finally reached the gate. Waiting for
him there, however, was a blockade of armored trucks and two rows of guards.
Leonard gritted his teeth, rolled down the window, and yelled, “Svoboda!”* He
quickly pulled his head back into the vehicle as he slammed through the blockade.
The truck’s airbag deployed, but Leonard made it through well otherwise.
Leonard smirked as the airbag deflated and he drove away from the prison.

*Translates to “Freedom!”
