When I was in public school I had a really hard time making friends too. My 6th grade friends found better people to hang out with and I was pretty much friendless for a few days. In my 7th period class I sat by a girl named Sami, I just said hi and we became best friends.
I know that shyness can get in the way, but you just gotta push through it and you'll do just fine. Look for people who have similar interests as you. Join a club, I hear that's a good way to make friends.

Just don't come on too strong. xD I have an embarrassing experience with coming on too strong. But I won't go into that.
Try to not to start a conversation with "Hi, how are you." That tends to be a conversations killer. Introduce yourself and ask them about things they like. or act adorable and the people will start flooding in. :3
